Environment and Parks
The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly clear to all of us as we experience more extreme weather events. And people are asking for more opportunities to enjoy green spaces in our City. That’s why I believe we need to make the greener choice the easier choice.
Since being elected Mayor we have:
- Launched a Climate and Environment Task Force to prepare a Climate and Environment Strategy.
- Completed improvements at Hammersley, Mahon, and Semisch parks.
- Approved the Kings Mill Walk Park Master Plan and preparing for implementation.
- Directed staff to begin the process of master planning Waterfront Park.
- Created 2 new Central Lonsdale parks set to be delivered in 2023-2025.
- Provided the safe consumption of alcohol in select City parks.
- Investment in new Accessible Playgrounds in City Elementary Schools.
- Expanded the urban tree canopy by planting 4700 new trees and shrubs.
- Adopted a new tree bylaw and directed staff to create a new urban forest management strategy.
- Held 44 Park Stewardship events with 4000 plus volunteer hours contributed.
- Community Wildfire Protection Plan completed and tactics completed for all high priority treatment areas.
- Approved the Priority Corridors for All Ages and Abilities (AAA), prioritizing infrastructures upgrades to key corridors across the City.
- Adopted the Electric Vehicle Strategy and delivered several new fast charging stations.
- Ongoing sidewalk infill to improve accessibility, support access to transit, commercial areas and other key destinations such as schools, hospital and its surrounding campus.
- Moving forward with Dog Friendly Strategy.
- Advocating to the Provincial Government for pet friendly homes in rental buildings.
- Adopted new mass timber technology in our buildings.
