About

Linda was first elected Mayor of the City of North Vancouver in November, 2018. Her goal is to build a healthy and inclusive city where people come first.
As Mayor, she has established herself as a leader both on the North Shore and throughout Metro Vancouver. She is proud to serve as Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Invest Vancouver Management Board as well as a member of the TransLink Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation where she is Chair of the Public Affairs and Governance Standing Committee. As a member of the TransLink Mayors’ Council and Chair of North Shore Connects, she has led the charge to secure rapid transit to the North Shore.
Prior to her election as Mayor, Linda served as a member of North Vancouver City Council from 2011 to 2018 and prior to that she was an elected Trustee on the North Vancouver School Board.
Born and raised in the City, Linda has deep roots in North Vancouver. Her father, Jim Buchanan, was a popular teacher and principal whose name is given to the annual “Buchanan Bowl” football match between Carson Graham and Handsworth high schools and the James Buchanan Theatre at Argyle secondary school. Her mother, Verna, has served the community in a volunteer capacity for decades. Linda credits her parents for her love for the community and public service.
Linda holds a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in nursing from the University of British Columbia. Prior to her election as Mayor, Linda worked for close to 30 years as a public health nurse for Vancouver Coastal Health delivering preventative nursing services and immunization programs to the general public, members of the Squamish Nation, and in North Shore schools and community clinics. In 2019, she received the UBC School of Nursing Centenary Medal of Distinction for her achievements in nursing and in 2023 she received the UBC Faculty of Applied Science Dean’s Medal of Distinction for excellence in her field.
Linda’s first involvement in civic politics came through her role in helping to secure funding for the heritage preservation and renovation of Ridgeway Elementary School, one of the City’s most important heritage properties. She is a founding member of the Ridgeway Heritage Society.
Linda lives in the Ridgeway/Grand Boulevard neighbourhood with her husband, Kevin, where they raised their four children. They enjoy riding their bikes along the Spirit Trail, listening to jazz music, and supporting the local arts and culture scene.
